A Narrow Escape

A few Sundays ago, I narrowly escaped breaking a few toes along a trail.

Typically, this particular trail’s switchbacks mandate one’s full time and attention due to their steepness, rockiness, and exposure. One wrong step might lead you to either eat a faceful of talus slope rocks or launch yourself off an 800 foot cliff. Since both of these options are neither pleasant nor conducive to one’s health and continued running, this is the kind of trail you run to get in a lot of elevation over a short distance, rather than a trail you run fast.

Even though I knew all of this, I was inspired by feeling strong and by the first truly beautiful day in a long time. It was shorts and sports bra weather and I was feeling stellar as I rounded the corner on 4 1/2 hours of running. It was 2 miles and 1500 feet down to the trailhead, where I would end my run. I joyfully and seemingly without negative consequence tore down the trail, all smiles, all arms flailing, all long-strided.

Several hours later and back at home, I noticed an acute pain on the bottom of a few metatarsals in my left foot. I knew that my too-aggressive running down the rocky trail in road shoes (The road shoes on trails is not an uncommon occurence for me, though.) had somehow injured my toes. I was able to continue my workouts without modification and pain if I ran with 3 toes strategically taped together and with padding beneath them. However, barefooted, unpadded walking was so uncomfortable! This pain persisted for weeks, slowly fading over time. Now, I think it’s *finally* gone, but I learned my lesson!

hah! meghan, you crack me up. no posting about the pain WHILE you have it, lest someone tell you to stop running so that you can heal.

Audrey- I thought of you so many times!

JeffO- Yeah, I hope so, too. I’m assuming it was some nasty bruising.

    Danni- I know it, girl!

Jeff- More like, if I don’t post about it, I’m not injured. 😉 And, yes, I feel great right now!
